How GiftCat Chooses Gifts

Most “best gifts” lists are assembled by whoever pays the most, scraped by a bot, or copy-pasted from the same ten articles everyone else copied. That’s the whole reason GiftCat exists — so here’s exactly how we do it differently. No mystery, no magic. (Okay, a little magic. The cat insists.)

The short version

Real people tell us what they’d love → AI helps us dig through thousands of options → a human actually picks the good ones on Amazon → and nothing makes the catalog unless we’d genuinely give it ourselves.

Step 1 — We ask actual humans

Before any product, there’s a person. We start every category by talking to the real people behind it — our friends, their partners, our parents, our siblings, the whole cast of characters we’re shopping for. We ask the unglamorous, useful questions: What’s the best gift you ever got? What flopped? What would you secretly love but never buy for yourself?

It’s the opposite of guessing. The patterns that come out of those conversations are what make GiftCat’s picks feel like they came from someone who actually knows the person — because, well, we kind of asked them.

Step 2 — We let AI do the heavy digging

Once we know what real people want, we point AI at the haystack. It helps us research specific products, surface options we’d never have found on our own, and spot patterns across thousands of listings in minutes. AI is brilliant at breadth and speed, so we let it do breadth and speed.

What AI does not do is make the final call. (More on that next.)

Step 3 — A human actually picks it

Here’s the non-negotiable: every gift in our catalog is chosen by a real person. We go to Amazon, look at the actual product — the photos, the reviews, the ratings, the price, the brand — and only the ones we genuinely like earn a spot in the database. Then a human tags each one by occasion, recipient, vibe and budget so it can find its way to the right person later.

If it wouldn’t pass the “would I actually give this?” test, it doesn’t get published. Simple as that.

Step 4 — The advisor matches it to your person

When you use GiftCat’s advisor, it works from that hand-curated catalog — not the whole internet. You tell it who you’re shopping for, the occasion and your budget, and the AI narrows our human-approved picks down to a short list that actually fits. Human curation for quality; AI for the perfect, personalised match. Best of both species.

What has to be true for a gift to make the cut

Every pick has to be:

  • A real, physical product you can buy on Amazon right now — no vaporware.
  • Actually purchasable by a regular person (no impossible-to-source, “ships in three months” oddities).
  • Something we’d genuinely give — useful, delightful, or both.
  • A clear fit for a real person, occasion, vibe or budget.
  • Decent quality, from a brand with a track record we can stand behind.

And a few things we simply won’t list: services, subscriptions, print-on-demand items that can’t ship reliably, and gimmicky junk that’s fun for five seconds and in a drawer forever.

What we don’t do (the honest bit)

We’d rather tell you our limits than pretend we don’t have any:

  • We don’t lab-test every product. We’re curators and researchers, not a testing facility — and we’ll never fake a “we tested all 50!” claim we didn’t earn.
  • We don’t copy Amazon’s descriptions. Every “why this works” is written by us, in our own words.
  • We don’t post fake reviews or star ratings. If we ever show a rating, we’ll tell you exactly where it came from.
  • Brands can’t pay to be featured. No pay-to-play, ever. A gift earns its spot or it doesn’t.
  • We don’t chase the fattest commission. The best gift wins, not the most lucrative one.

Keeping it fresh

Amazon controls prices and stock, and both move. We refresh the catalog regularly and prune dead links — but it’s always worth a quick glance at the live price on the product page before you buy.
